How to start a career visual artist (painting large abstract art)?
I am not a trained artist, but my father painted cars, my grandmother was a trained artist. I studied abroad and the liberal arts, so I'm well versed in life.
This will depend on a number of factors. Do you thrive on rejection? Can you let go of what you want and create what the market wants? If so, start creating a body of work. Home show. This can be a show at home, at local businesses like your bank or wherever they will let you hang up. Then get feedback. Then start to display in art fairs. Do a search for art exhibitions, craft fairs and find a number of promoters. Do not jump yet. Find local artist showing in these programs and find what sells and what does not. Next begin to produce what will sell. Buy a tent, hangars, and stands to sell out (to about few thousand) and must be able to sell credit cards. You can skip this remote control function using PayPal sales. Listen to feedback. Part of feedback is what sells. My first big show, the Washington Square exhibition of outdoor art in New York made me close to $ 3000. Most old timers, then included many pop artists who know and have seen their work, told me not to expect to do very well. When they found out what I did were surprised. You have to learn to make small first sample. Then work your way up to large. Winter Park makes most of the artists more than 30 K in the short time in the series. Each artist can have four times as much in volume. This means you have to have four times more than we expect do a show in retail sales. However, many who have been there for years could have done 10K to 40K. Why the famous artist shows here? They wanted to get feedback from buyers firsthand. If you create what you want, you always have someone who is happy with his work. If you create what appeals to the masses, you have masses that buy their work. One more thing ... you're not in the business of creating art if you want to succeed. You will need to be in the business of collection of collectors of his art. You realize that what you are asking to take a book to answer. Best wishes and how long is it going, you might do well.
