Why does the picture on our brand new HDTV look like shit compared to our 20 year old box TV?

I just bought a brand new 32" Sony Bravia HDTV for my boyfriend for Christmas. The picture looked like crap no matter how we messed with the settings. We thought that it was because we were using a converter box so we signed up for basic cable. Well, all of the cable channels still look like shit and all of the old channels don't come in at all. On our old box TV the picture comes in mint. Does anyone know how to fix this?

You need an HD cable box, so switch it out with your provider and get one. Then you need an HDMI cable to attach the box to your new tv. Then it will look great, you'll get most of the channels in HD.
